Trust statement on Lucy Letby investigation

This page was updated on 06/09/23

Following the recent trial verdicts, our thoughts are with the parents and families of the victims and everyone who has been affected.

As detailed in news reports and information provided by Cheshire Police, there is an ongoing investigation relating to the full period of Lucy Letby’s career, including training placements at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, which took place between October – December 2012 and January – February 2015.

Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust has been liaising with Cheshire Police throughout this investigation and we will continue to do so going forward. As this is an ongoing investigation, we are unable to provide any more information at this time. Any further details will be shared by Cheshire Police in due course.

Anyone relevant to this ongoing investigation is aware and they have been supported throughout by Cheshire Police and the Trust.

If any parents, families, or carers need support, advice or reassurance about the care provided to babies on the Neonatal Unit at Liverpool Women's during the above periods of time, please get in touch with our Patient Experience Team in the first instance by emailing pals@lwh.nhs.uk or call 0151 702 4353 to provide your contact details and a member of our team will get back in touch with you.

Advice on dealing with approaches from the media

We have been made aware by some families whose babies received care on our Neonatal Unit in 2012 and/or 2015, that they have been contacted by journalists about the care received with attempts to make an association with Lucy Letby’s short time at the Trust.

For families who have been approached, we know that this has been upsetting and we would like to make it clear that we do not condone insensitive approaches of this nature.

Anyone relevant to the ongoing investigation at Liverpool Women’s is aware and they have been supported throughout by the Trust and Cheshire Police.

Choosing to speak to the media is a personal choice. However, we know that recent approaches have been upsetting for the majority of people who have been contacted. Therefore, we would like to provide some advice on how you may choose to deal with this.

You can contact our Communications Team at communcation@lwh.nhs.uk to make us aware of any unwanted approaches you receive. If you have concerns about anything that you are told, we would advise that before continuing any conversations with the media, that you contact the Trust first to establish the facts. The Communications Team will share your contact details with the Neonatal Unit and they will make contact with you.

If any journalists or other members of the press try to contact you repeatedly, this is likely grounds for their activity to be reported to IPSO – the Independent Press Standards Organisation. IPSO is the independent regulator of most of the UK’s newspapers and magazines.

IPSO enforces the Editors’ Code – this states that journalists must not engage in harassment, intimidation or persistent pursuit.  If you ask a journalist to stop their activities, the Editors’ Code says they must do so, unless there is specific and adequate public interest to justify a decision to carry on.

IPSO is available 24-hours a day to discuss any concerns you might have.  From 9am to 5.30pm you can contact 0300 123 22 20.  Out-of-hours you can call 07799 903 929, leave a message explaining your concerns and you will receive a call back.

If they return to your house or continue to call and repeatedly try and make contact then this can be raised with the media outlet in question and IPSO.
