Liverpool Geneticist Honoured with Top Award

A Liverpool geneticist has been recognised for her contribution to healthcare at a national awards ceremony.

Angela Douglas, Scientific Director of the Cheshire and Merseyside Genetics Laboratory Service at Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, was named Healthcare Scientist of the Year, the top honour, at the 2015 Healthcare Science Awards.

Mrs Douglas, who is also chair of the British Society for Genetic Medicine, said: "To be named Healthcare Scientist of the Year is a real honour. I’m passionate about genetics and the massive impact that research into the subject could potentially have on future healthcare provision."

Mrs Douglas was given the award in recognition for her work in helping to ensure safe and sustainable healthcare science diagnostic services across England, her involvement in the national 100,000 Genomes Project and her overall contribution to the field of clinical genetic science.

NHS Healthcare Science said: "On top of all she has been doing, Angela lead a successful bid to make the North West Coast into a Genomic Medicine Centre entity for the 100’000 Genome Project. She used her leadership skills, scientific reputation and genomic knowledge to raise the standards of genomic services in the NHS and improve the outcomes for patients across the North West Coast."

Mrs Douglas, who was last year named as one of the most inspirational women in healthcare by the Health Service Journal, continued: "The 100,000 Genome Project is something the whole country should be really excited about and I’m thrilled to be a part of it! This project will make a significant difference to how cancers and rare diseases are diagnosed and treated in future generations, and promises to position the NHS as a world leader in genomic medicine."
