BLOG: Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

The Physiotherapy Team at Liverpool Women’s work within the wider Multi-disciplinary team, supporting women with their pelvic health symptoms.

As Pelvic Health Specialist Physiotherapists we treat a wide variety of conditions women may experience with their pelvic health throughout their lifetime. The main issues women present with are symptoms around continence, both bladder and bowel. Continence means being able to voluntarily control emptying the bladder and bowels effectively, in a socially acceptable place and in a hygienic way suitable to that person. Unfortunately, sometimes we can experience difficulties with these processes that we may have once taken for granted.

Any pelvic health dysfunction can have detrimental effects on a woman’s self-esteem, health, wellbeing and physical performance. This is where we, as specialist physiotherapists, can help you understand, navigate, manage and improve the symptoms you are experiencing.

SYMPTOMS (you may be experiencing)

  • Leaking
  • Urgency
  • Frequency
  • Constipation
  • Pain on Voiding
  • Straining
  • Toilet Mapping

TREATMENTS (you may expect)

  • Lifestyle advice
  • Exercise
  • Pelvic floor muscle training
  • Education
  • Irrigation

Involuntary loss or inability to empty the bladder or bowel is common but never normal.

If your symptoms are bothering you, impacting the way you feel about yourself, stopping you being able to exercise, socialise or even leave the house regularly, you can ask your healthcare provider to refer you in to see one of our Pelvic Health Physiotherapy team at Liverpool Women’s.
