Medical education

Liverpool Women’s Hospital is a well renowned teaching hospital for medical students and trainees.  We provide and encourage high-quality continuing professional development for ‘Doctors in Training’ in the five specialties which exist in this Trust - Maternity, Gynaecology, Neonatal Care, Genetics and Anaesthetics.

We endeavour to provide training that meets GMC Standards and are in line with Health Education England’s Quality Framework. We work with our Trainers to provide a quality educational experience for all doctors and students in training within the Trust.

    College Tutors

  • Trainee Teaching Available in the Trust

    We have Trust Great Days (quarterly) which are an opportunity for all specialties to present an interesting case, research or audits. Clinic and theatre sessions are cut to accommodate learning in the Trust. The dates for the rest of the year are: -

    • 13 September 2019
    • 13 December 2019

    We also have the Bigger Breakfast meetings which are held monthly on the first Friday of the month this gives trainees/students opportunities to present their research and audit work or any interesting cases they would like to present.

    Specialty Trainees in O & G 

    • As a Trust we provide all the required courses an O & G Trainee will need for their training in line with the National Curriculum this allows the Trainees to be trained locally.
    • The education team work closely with the Regional O & G Trainees by supporting the Regional Teaching Programme with speakers a venue and administrative support.
    • We provide monthly teaching on Wednesday mornings for O & G Trainees and monthly still birth and each baby counts reviews.
    • CTG teaching is held weekly and regular MDT clinical incident review meeting provide and opportunity for learning.

    General Practice Trainees

    • We provide weekly teaching for GP & Foundation Trainees to cover core topics in the RCGP Women’s Health Module.
    • GP Trainees are released to attend BI weekly regional teaching

    Foundation Trainees

    • We provide weekly teaching for Foundation Trainees held with our GP Trainees in addition to releasing them for their weekly base Trust teaching sessions.

    Anaesthetic Trainees

    • The Anaesthetic Team run their own courses specifically to support their Anaesthetic Trainees.
    • They have weekly in-house training and a journal club fortnightly.
    • They have multidisciplinary simulation training to help support core trainees.

    Neonatal Trainees

    • The Neonatal Team provide week long Regional Teaching for ST4 to ST7 Trainees.
    • They have Grand Rounds every Wednesday to discuss difficult cases.

    Genetics Trainees

    • They have weekly medical case discussion and Clinical Genetic referral meetings.
    • Weekly Clinical Genetics prenatal meetings.
    • Monthly X ray MDT meetings.
    • Monthly Fetal pathology MDT meetings.
    • Monthly Neurogenetics MDT meetings.
  • Courses Available in the Trust

    As a Trust we provide all the required courses an O & G Trainee will need for their training in line with the National Curriculum and working in collaboration with the Regional O & G Consultants to deliver the following courses:

    • Basic Practical Skills 7 & 8 November 2019
    • Basic Ultrasound course 12 October 2019
    • 3rd Degree Tear Course 12 November 2019
    • MOET Course 2 & 3 December 2019
    • Advanced Labour Ward Course 15 to 17 January 2020
    • ROBuST June 2020
    • NLS Course 10 courses per year details can be provided.

  • Undergraduate Education

    The Undergraduate Team are very proud to work with Liverpool Medical School to provide a quality educational experience for all 3rd, 4th and 5th Year Students. 

    We will have up to 254 4th Years, 126 3rd Years and 40 5th Years rotating though the Trust each year. 

    Each student will be allocated to an Educational Supervisor on arrival at the Trust and will be supported by the clinical and medical teams to enhance their learning experience in preparing them to be a doctor of the future. 

    It is important to us that we give the student the best experience and inspire them to hopefully become O & G or Neonatal doctors of the future.

  • Elective Students
