Volunteering at the Liverpool Women's Hospital
Here at the Liverpool Women's Hospital (LWH) we know how important it is to make our volunteers feel welcome, supported and valued in their roles to ensure that all our volunteers have a positive experience.
Our volunteers help deliver services and projects throughout the organisation in a variety of roles. They bring a diverse range of experience, skills and knowledge and they are an amazing group of people who, not only, enjoy making a difference but are essential to improving our patients journey and supporting staffs wellbeing.

We have various volunteering opportunities that suit all abilities, from ages 16, and we welcome applications from people of all walks of life.
We understand that some of you are considering careers in Health and Social Care, and we aim to provide you with knowledge, experience and insight into the workings of the NHS, achieving this through volunteering in clinical areas and working alongside support staff and clinical staff. Therefore, those interested in pursuing a career in health and social care are given opportunities to broaden their experience through volunteering in Meet and Greet, and Antenatal Clinic before transferring to the Volunteer Responder Role if clinical area experience is what's desired (you can find details of these roles further down the page).
Recruitment:
The majority of our volunteering opportunities are subject to medical clearance (including evidence of immunity to measles and rubella), DBS check and two references. The recruitment process usually takes between 2-3 months to complete; therefore we only consider applications from individuals who intend to volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours per week, for at least 6 months.

Firstly, attend one of our monthly Group Informal Chats. At these group sessions we talk about volunteering opportunities at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital, and what qualities and skills you could bring to enhance our patients’ and visitors’ journey, along with what you hope to gain from the experience. Can you spare 4 hours each week, are you enthusiastic, eager to help others, aged between 16 and 100+ and have good communication skills? Yes! Then we would love you to join our Volunteer Meet and Greet Service at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital.
The Meet and Greet service core hours are: Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm.

LWH specialises in the health of women and their babies. Our Hospital represents some of the most outstanding expertise and experience in this field.
We are always looking for friendly confident and helpful people to join the volunteering service at LWH. We now have vacancies to become part of the Volunteer Responder team. As a Volunteer Responder you will engage with patients as part of a large multi-disciplinary team of nurses, doctors and therapists. Although the role is non-clinical, you would have a key part to play in providing the hospital with additional resource for supporting and assisting with non-clinical tasks such as chatting to patients, distributing meals, making drinks and running errands for staff and patients.
Here at LWH we put patients first and this new all-encompassing Volunteer Responder role ensures they have the best possible experience. Some of the duties include,
Check n Chat rounds (ward areas only) to identify patient need and offer support i.e. comfort, refreshments,
Monitor and action requests for help from within the centralised Volunteer Hub - deploy volunteers as necessary.
Befriending: spending time with patients who for example: Have few visitors; Are based in side rooms; Have cognitive impairments or suffering from delirium; Have post-operative restricted movement
Supporting patient’s during mealtime

Candidates must be aged 18+ and available to complete the full training and induction programme.
This role is subject to two suitable references, health clearance (including written evidence of immunity to Measles and Rubella), DBS disclosure and involves working without supervision.
We are only able to consider applications from candidates who can volunteer for a minimum of four hours per week for at least six months.

The hospital Chaplaincy Service seeks to build a relationship of trust through compassionate presence and thereby offer help and support to a diversity of people.
Such support might focus on the emotional or spiritual adjustment to illness, or a search for meaning and purpose during illness.
The service also aims to help in crisis situations, including family/relationship issues as well as bereavement care.
Chaplains work alongside other health care professionals collectively and collaboratively to provide psycho-social-spiritual services for patients and families.
Chaplains possess a particular understanding of the relation between faith, illness, and the emotional and mental conflicts that arise.
A chaplain seeks to motivate and initiate meaningful use of each individual’s beliefs and attitudes in the management of their problems.
The chaplain’s role is supportive, serving as a guide to the psycho-spiritual needs of the staff and patients.
CHAPLAINCY VOLUNTEER VISITORS
Chaplaincy Volunteers Visitors play a very special role in helping the Chaplaincy team at the hospital build up relationships with patients and staff. We welcome volunteers from all faiths and training is provided.

The hospital offers a comprehensive range of specialist antenatal services and clinics. The team is multidisciplinary and combines leading Consultants, Specialist Midwives & Nurses and other clinicians i.e. Ultrasonographers.
Our ANC clinics at the Liverpool and Aintree Hospital site receive valuable support from our volunteers.
By ensuring patients have checked in at Oupatients Reception, asking patients to provide a urine sample and ensuring the patients are sat in the correct waiting area reduces delays and patients missing their appointments.
This role is extremely valuable and the volunteers play important role in the smooth running of the clinics!
We're looking for volunteers aged 16+ from all walks of life to help at either the Liverpool Hospital (Crown Street) site or Aintree Hospital (Longmoor Lane) site. No experience is required as full induction and training will be provided.

Our Post Room volunteers work with the Post Master to help distribute the mail and and collect outgoing mail from the ground floor departments at the Liverpool Women's Hospital.
Micheal has learning difficulties and has delivered the mail to clinics and departments at the hospital for over 10 years.
This is a very sociable role that would suit people from all walks of life. No previous experience necessary as support, full training and induction will be provided on commencement in post.
If you would like to become a Post room Volunteer, are aged 16 and over, can spare 2 to 3 hours weekdays please get in touch.
